Orbit and B-hyve: what fails first and what repairs cost

Orbit’s B-hyve line is the Wi-Fi-connected, app-based smart controller we see most often on newer installs and upgrades across Marion County, and it’s popular specifically because it lets a homeowner check and adjust their watering schedule from a phone, which matters more here than in a county with one uniform watering rule, since Marion County splits between two water management districts with two different current schedules.

What fails first

1. Wi-Fi connectivity. The single most common B-hyve issue: the controller loses its network connection, often after a router replacement or a network password change, and falls back to a stored offline schedule that may not reflect your latest programming.
2. App pairing after a firmware update. Occasionally a firmware update requires re-pairing the controller with the app, which looks like a bigger failure than it is.
3. Physical rain sensor wiring, on units with one connected. B-hyve’s weather-skip feature uses forecast data, but a wired sensor responding to actual local rainfall is the more legally defensible way to meet Florida’s requirement, and its wiring connection is checked the same as any brand’s.
4. Valve and head hardware. Whatever brand of valves and heads a B-hyve controller is paired with (Orbit’s own, or another brand on an upgraded older system) fails the same way any brand’s does: grit, age, and physical damage.
5. Backup power during outages. Like other controllers, a B-hyve unit needs to hold its program through a power blip; check this the same way you would on any brand if a schedule seems to have reverted.

Weather-skip vs. a wired rain sensor: which one is compliant

B-hyve’s app can skip a scheduled watering based on forecast data for your area, which is a genuinely useful feature but is not the same thing Florida Statute 373.62 requires. The statute calls for technology that responds to actual, local “periods of sufficient moisture,” which a forecast-based skip approximates but doesn’t directly measure. A physical, wired rain sensor that detects real rainfall at your specific property is the more defensible way to meet the letter of the requirement, and we recommend keeping one wired in and tested even on a B-hyve system that also uses weather-skip, rather than relying on the app feature alone.

Setting expectations honestly

We’re an independent local service, not an Orbit dealer or factory representative, and we service B-hyve systems the same way we service any brand: diagnose before quoting, and separate a genuine hardware failure from a connectivity or pairing issue that doesn’t need a new part at all. If a unit is under Orbit’s manufacturer warranty, check with Orbit before paying anyone for a hardware replacement.
